“So far, it’s been great,” Kozlowski remarked, highlighting their efforts to broaden the inventory and introduce additional merchandise to meet customer needs. The store serves multiple purposes for its patrons. Weekend travelers and anglers frequently stop by the delicatessen for freshly prepared sandwiches and beverages, providing a quick refuel during their adventures.
For motorists passing through the area, Wolfe’s offers gasoline services, ensuring convenience in this isolated locale. Tucked away in the back is a small wine shop, adding a touch of variety to the offerings. However, the fly shop at the rear stands out as a major attraction, stocked comprehensively with essentials for fly anglers, including rods, reels, an extensive selection of flies, books, fishing attire, and other specialized gear.
Kozlowski acknowledged the fly shop’s significant draw, emphasizing that the knowledgeable staff goes beyond sales to provide valuable information and guidance to anglers. To further support this community, the store now employs three fishing guides, offering various packages such as float trips down Pine Creek targeting trout or smallmouth bass. “May is our busiest month of the whole year mostly because of the fishing,” Kozlowski noted, underscoring the seasonal surge in activity.

“The rail trail brings a lot of people in,” Kozlowski observed, illustrating how the trail’s popularity bolsters the business. For over 40 years prior to the Kozlowskis’ ownership, Tom and Deb Finkiner operated Wolfe’s, cultivating its status as a beloved destination for both locals and visitors to the Pine Creek Valley.
“A lot of people have been coming in here for many years,” Kozlowski said. “They all know Wolfe’s General Store.” The establishment receives daily inquiries from anglers seeking updates on fishing conditions and from hikers inquiring about trail access points. Its fame even extends beyond Pennsylvania, with calls coming from as far as Montana due to the acclaimed fly fishing in the area.
Operating in such a secluded setting presents challenges, particularly in recruiting staff from a limited local pool. The business experiences seasonal fluctuations, with customer traffic dipping during winter months. Nevertheless, the heavy snowfall of the past winter attracted more snowmobilers than usual, providing an unexpected boost.
Despite these hurdles, Kozlowski expressed no regrets about taking on the venture amid the stunning natural surroundings of northcentral Pennsylvania. When reflecting on the most rewarding aspect, he emphasized the interactions with customers: “Just the people. 90% of those who come in are happy. They are vacationing and fishing.”
