The accident unfolded when an officer in an unmarked Howard County Police Department vehicle attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a 2010 Honda Accord along Route 32 near Broken Land Parkway in Columbia. The officer observed the vehicle and signaled for it to pull over as part of routine enforcement. However, the driver, identified as a juvenile female and the sole occupant of the Honda, did not comply and accelerated away from the stop.

The Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division (IID) announced the identification of the officer on January 21, 2026. The officer, Brian Maurantonio, a four-year veteran assigned to the Howard County Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Section, was not injured in the incident.
