Wisconsin DNR Relaunches Check Out State Parks at Your Library Program for 2026

Madison, Wisconsin – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is bringing back the Check Out Wisconsin State Parks At Your Library program for 2026, offering library patrons a convenient way to access free day passes for state parks, forests and recreation areas statewide.[1][2]

This initiative encourages more Wisconsinites to explore the state’s public lands through a partnership between the DNR, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and over 120 participating libraries. Now entering its fifth year, the program has seen significant growth since its launch in fall 2022 as a pilot with 20 public libraries. By 2024, participation expanded to 160 libraries across more than 200 locations, including the first specialized libraries such as the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Wisconsin-Superior.[3][4]

“There’s always something new to discover when you explore Wisconsin’s state parks,” said Missy VanLanduyt, DNR recreation partnerships section supervisor. “We offer events, programs, guided hikes, skill-building opportunities and gear-loaner programs to help you make the most of your visit.”[5]

Library cardholders can check out a daily vehicle admission pass at no cost, along with an informational kit containing maps, stickers, accessibility details and more. This setup makes it easier for newcomers to plan their outings and enjoy the diverse offerings of the Wisconsin State Park System, which hosts nearly 2,000 events and nature programs each year.[6][7]

Visitors are advised to prepare for their trips by reviewing property conditions, maps and essential packing lists, such as appropriate clothing, insect repellent and safety gear. Popular spots can get crowded on summer weekends, but the system includes hidden gems for quieter experiences. Activities range from hiking and biking to indoor nature center explorations on inclement days.[8]

The program’s expansion underscores the DNR’s commitment to broadening outdoor recreation access and introducing new audiences to Wisconsin’s natural treasures. In addition to public libraries, the initiative now welcomes specialized institutions, further democratizing entry to these protected areas that support conservation and wildlife habitats.

Libraries looking to join or replenish their stock of passes can purchase them in sets of nine for $45 through preferred methods like credit card by contacting Dawn Hirst at Devil’s Lake State Park. Checks or invoices are also options, with support encouraged from community partners, businesses and municipalities to sustain the effort. A full list of participating libraries by county is available for reference.[9]

Patrons preparing for their first visit should consult the DNR’s resources on visiting state parks, which cover everything from pet policies and water safety to tick prevention and camping reservations. This program not only removes financial barriers to entry but also equips users with the knowledge to responsibly enjoy and protect these vital public resources.

As winter gives way to spring, the return of this library pass program positions 2026 as an ideal year for families, students and outdoor enthusiasts to venture into Wisconsin’s expansive network of public lands. Whether discovering guided programs or simply soaking in the scenery, the initiative fosters a deeper connection to the state’s rich outdoor recreation heritage.
